buildingSMART International Awards 2020
[yoast-breadcrumb]
The 2020 Awards Finals took place on the 28th and 29th October, and was brought to you as part of the buildingSMART International Virtual Summit 2020. We had a record number of 111 submissions, which is testament to how sought after winning one of the Awards has become. With more submissions than ever came more jurors than ever, which by pure coincidence also stood at 111.
The consistent high quality of the submissions lead to the jurors having to make some tough decisions, but ultimately 10 winners were decided upon. The full submissions for each of the Winners, Finalists and Special Mentions can be found below.
If you have a project which you would like to enter for the 2021 Awards, or would simply like to make an enquiry into the process, please get in touch with us now.
Award Categories for 2020
The Project Delivery category is for firms typically in the AEC industry that deliver projects in the various phases of design, construction and handover. For the Operational category, submissions should demonstrate the successful use of standards and solutions during the operations and maintenance of assets. Typically this category is for owner-operators. The Research category is for academia. Finally, the Technology category is design for software companies and organizations that either use or develop buildingSMART related applications and solutions. More information about each category can be found below.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
No. This awards program is to acknowledge exemplary use of openBIM; only openBIM evidence will be considered for an award.
No. However the Project Phase being demonstrated for receipt of an award must have been completed in order to show results. For example, a submission to the Design Using OpenBIM award category must be a project that has completed the Design Phase.
The submission must demonstrate results of using openBIM, wherever in the process that may be.
Yes. If you feel the project has merit and will be competitive with other submissions, you are welcome to submit your project for consideration. Projects can take multiple years to complete; submitters may decide to submit the same project to later project phase awards where results are available to demonstrate.
Yes. If you feel the project has merit and will be competitive with other submissions, you are welcome to submit your project for consideration. However, projects that won an award will not be able to requalify for the same category they won an award for. Projects that won an award are still eligible to submit for a different category. Past submitters are also eligible to submit a new project to the same category they have won an award for previously.
Yes. If you feel the project has merit and will be competitive with other submissions, you are welcome to submit your project for consideration. All other competitions outside of this program have no bearing on this competition.
Yes. Where IFC has been used, we expect to see the project workflows in action. However, for submissions that did not use IFC and are demonstrating the use of other buildingSMART open standards, tools and products (or in addition to IFC), we expect to see a clear demonstration of workflows for those (also).
Absolutely! We encourage all well-documented experiences with all buildingSMART standards, tools and products. Indeed, there is an optional field in the submission to identify this for additional points.
Although there is no requirement for the completion of a Use Case Template, any information about Use Cases is highly encouraged as part of the overall submission.
There are several ways that evidence for the use of openBIM can be documented. The submission platform allows for written fields as well as attachments. Attachments to the submission are for any visual information to support the written information, such as, but not limited to:
- Images
- Presentations slides with screen shots and detailed descriptions
- Flow charts or diagrams showing openBIM workflows
- Short (<2-minute) videos demonstrating how Open Standards (eg. IFC) was used on the project
- Project URL
- Project model files
- Company Marketing material
- Drone flyover video of the project
